The Happy Planet Index (HPI)

A map of the world that does not include utopia is not worth even glancing at.
Oscar Wilde

The future is not the result of choices among alternative paths offered by the present, but a place that is created - created first in the mind and will, created next in activity. The future is not some place we are going to, but one we are creating. The paths are not to be found, but made, and the activity of making them changes both the maker and the destination.
John Scharr

Each country's HPI value is a function of its average subjective life satisfaction, life expectancy at birth and ecological footprint per capita.

The Happy Planet Index (HPI) is an index of human well-being and environmental impact introduced by the New Economics Foundation (NEF) in July 2006.
This index was designed to challenge well-established indices of countries' development, such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Human Development Index (HDI) which are seen as not taking sustainability into account.

With the highest levels of reported life satisfaction, and the highest happy life years, Costa Rica stands out in the HPI even before considering its ecological footprint. It has the fifth-lowest poverty index in the developing world and the proportion of people living on less than $2 a-day is lower than in Romania - an EU member. What makes these results even more remarkable is that it achieves this with a quarter of the footprint of the USA.

Costa Rica has a democracy and takes very deliberate steps to reduce its environmental impact. Unique in world for having combined its ministries of energy and the environment back in the 1970s, a staggering 99 per cent of its energy comes from renewable sources. Further explanations for Costa Rica first place:
-Rich natural capital.
-Equal treatment of women.
-Strong political participation.
-Solid social network of friends, families and neighbourhoods, allowed by a sensible work-life balance.
-The abolition of the country's army in 1949, freeing up government money to spend on social programmes.
